Symposium, Approaching the Past: The Dilemma of Period Rooms in American Museums, 10/19/1984-10/20/1984
Scope and Contents
2 days of panels on decorative arts and period rooms. From the flyer for the symposium: Welcoming remarks by Director Robert T. Buck; "The Classic Approach to the Period Room: A Critique and Update" by Kenneth L. Ames; "The Room Retreats: An Alternative to Period Rooms in Art Museums" by Patricia E. Kane; "Not Only Pleasing but Convincing: The Evolution of the Period Room at Colonial Williamsburg" by Ronald L. Hurst; "On-site vs. Off-site Preservation: The Room Out of Context" by Charles Hasbrouck; "Continuing with the Past: Where to Go in the Future" by Diane Pilgrim; "The Period Room: Original, Recreation, or Reproduction?" by Oswaldo Rodriguez Roque. Both days had panel discussions with all participants moderated by Kevin Stayton. It is unclear, though likely, if all talks are represented in the cassette tapes.
