The Teaching Lab, 1989-2009

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

The Teaching Lab was a special initiative for the whole Education Division. Beginning in 1989, the Teaching Lab was a space for Brooklyn Museum educators, interns, and other interested staff to share ideas and learn new skills related to teaching.

As museum educator Brian Brooks writes, "These skills are four in number: 1) The skillfull presentation of ideas and information. 2) Listening to others without interruption until all facts are presented. 3) Questioning to make certain that information is understood before opinions are stated. 4) Discussion which adds to that which has been presented, in a manner which is not adversarial. The Teaching Lab will foster the examination of gallery teaching concerns and will explore possible teaching methods in a genuine effort to be more effective as Museum Educators." Quoted from Box 25 Folder 1, the 1989 memo on the Teaching Lab.

Additional information on the Teaching Lab can be found in the general administrative files.
