According to the Brooklyn Apprentice's Library meeting minutes, the Brooklyn City Library was formed by individuals in the year 1828. The BCL had no affiliation with the BAL. In the early 1840s, The Brooklyn Apprentice's Library and the Brooklyn Lyceum merged to become the Brooklyn Institute. Previously, the BCL was housed within the Brooklyn Lyceum.
