Between 1887 and 1888 the American Astronomical Society became the Department of Astronomy with an intital 32 members. (Brooklyn Institute Yearbook, 1888-1889, page 47.) Members of the deparment held meetings at least once a month, and listened to relevant lectures. Lectures and meetings can be found in the BIAS Yearbooks.
