Publications, Exhibition Catalogs, and Ephemera
Scope and Contents
This series is composed of publications produced by the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, exhibition catalogs before 1897 or exhibitions not held at the Brooklyn Museum. Additionally, there is a small amount of ephemera about and produced by BIAS. Several of the publications are included in the general Brooklyn Libraries stacks as well. Constiutions and Bylaws of BIAS, BAL, and BI can all be found in their administrative files.
Exhibition catalogs past 1897 can be found in the Brooklyn Museum records, and the library catalog.
The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences Bulletin was a weekly/monthly serial publication that ran from 1908 to 1953. Each bulletin contained listings and photographs relating to the weekly/monthly events, concerts, lectures, and exhibitions offered by BIAS.
The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences Yearbook was published anually and it ran from 1888 (as the Brooklyn Institute) through 1917. It usually listed Board members, directors, members of BIAS, a history of the Institute, Works of the various departments from the previous year, and a brief financial outline.
The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences Prospectus were published annually and were similar to the Bulletins in that they announced the lectures, events, and Department activities of the coming season. The Prospectus ran from 1897-1938. These were largely annoucments of the Department's meeting schedules and special courses of lecture.
