Scope and Contents

This sub series is comprised of records relating to departments and larger institutions under the umbrella of the BIAS. BIAS created several large Brooklyn cultural institutions including: Cold Spring Biological Laboratory, Brooklyn Children's Museum, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Acadmey of Music. The Cold Spring Biological Laboratory was on Long Island and in the 1930s, BIAS let go of it and obtained Brooklyn Academy of Music. In addition to these institutions, BIAS had Departments based on specifica educational themes. Departments held meetings, lectures, exhibits, and were generally a place for people to exchange ideas. Departments and their events were managed by the Department of Education. After 1940 BAM cooridinated events.

As an example, in 1890, the Department of Photography held lectures on photography, and had a dark room open for members to use.

Various Departments existed within BIAS from the late 1880s through the early 1940s. Events, meetings, lectures, and exhibits can be found in the publication the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences Yearbook, and in Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences Bulletins.

Within each department/institution Meeting Minutes are generally listed first, followed by other documents in alphabetical order.
