Biographical / Historical
The Museum Education Consortium was founded in 1986 through MoMA's education department. The MEC was working to establish and research new technologies as tools for museum education. One such project was the video disc project, in which interactive and informative videos about themes represented in the galleries were created for in gallery use. The MEC was made up of 7 museums: the Art Institute of Chicago, The Brooklyn Museum, The Met, MoMA, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The National Museum in Washington D.C., and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This was seen as a kind of pilot program to discover and think about how technology can and should impact visitor experience.
