Letters from Gutmann describing daily life in Cairo along with sketches and watercolors; description of an ornate funeral procession for a sheik; description of a visit to the 15th century Arab home of a bookbinder; one letter from January 17th written in script rather than printed; letter stating that it is their first day aboard the Fostat and that Gutmann has met Professor Capard/Kapard, who teaches him a bit about hieroglyphs; elaborate watercolors of a trip to el Wasta and the pyramids there; many watercolors in Gutmann’s letters describing a trip to a large cemetery near Minya, which he calls the Village of the Dead.
